Mermaid's Garden
I cut and pieced the 60-degree triangle pieces of this quilt entirely from blue pieces and scraps in my stash. The quilt contains pieces from more than 40 years of quilting, including pieces of a fabric from the quilt I made in 1979 for my first child. I realized that nearly all of the fabrics were florals. When I decided on a blue solid for the sashing between the diamonds, I was drawn to a blue with the name, "Mediterranean." My mother, who was from southern France, was born on a ship at sea in the Mediterranean, and a teasing story perpetuated by my French grandmother said that my mother was actually a naughty mermaid baby who was tossed into her arms by a frustrated Mermaid. I just mailed this quilt to one of my sisters, who spent many years tending my aging mother's flower gardens, before our mother died in 2019. It's named Mermaid's Garden in honor of Mom. The quilt is pictured crosswise on a Queen bed.
