This project used scraps; some I have been saving since I was probably about 10 years old. I guess I've always been a collector! I started with a pattern called "Candy Stripes" by Cleo Snuggerud in Quilt Lovers' Favorites (vol. 2) by American Patchwork and Quilting. I added the horizontal stripe under the pillows. It makes me happy every time I see it. (Completed Jan. 2015)

Guiding Star

I created this quilt for my father. He has always been so good at leading me in the right direction. I designed the mariner's compass on the computer and completed it by paper piecing. I love the depth of color in the batiks. The center map fabric was a great ebay find. If you look closely you can see that I machine quilted a contour map of my hometown and the surrounding cliffs into the center of the quilt. (Completed 2013)

Blossoms of Blue

This was a Mother's Day gift for my dear mother. She is one of my best friends and I am so blessed to have her in my life. It is hard to see, but I stitched in the medium blue border the words to a song that the children sing at church. "I often go walking in meadows of clover, and I gather armfuls of blossoms of blue. I gather the blossoms the whole meadow over. Dear mother all flowers remind me of you. O mother, I give you my love with each flower to give forth sweet fragrance a whole lifetime through. For if I love blossoms and meadows and walking, I learned how to love them dear mother from you." ("I Often Go Walking", by Phyllis Luch.) I used a pattern by Marti Michell called "Summer Bliss" found in American Patchwork and Quilting, August 2012. The outer border is Treasures by Shabby Chic. (Completed, May 2014)

Stars and Bars

I seem to have a problem living with my mistakes! In the beginning I tended to give away all of my quilts because all I could see were the imperfections. This was the first of three of these quilts I completed. I gave two of them away and finally decided to keep the last one for me. This is a Minick and Simpson pattern called "Stars & Bars." Christmas Trees

I made this quilt way before I knew how to piece! I didn't even know how to put on a binding. I designed this quilt myself and used a fusible grid technique I saw on a day time talk show. (Completed sometime between 2000-2005. I'm getting too old to remember details!)

This was another Mother's Day present. I designed each square to represent one of my siblings. I used 1 1/2 inch squares on a fusible grid and embellished them with satin stitching and buttons. (Completed 2008)

Deck The Halls

First Quilt - Double Wedding Ring

Believe it or not, this was my very first quilt. My youth leaders at church encouraged us to set goals and I decided to make my own quilt - one just like I had seen at grandma's house! My mom had taught me basic sewing in 4H, but that was about all the experience I had. Grandma sent me the templates and a box of scraps to add to my collection. I don't know why somebody didn't suggest that I start on something a little easier for my first project. Maybe they did and I just didn't listen! It took me several years to finish the top. The girls in my youth group got together to help me complete the hand quilting. I don't know that I would dare tackle this project now. Maybe I was able to do it because I didn't know enough to be afraid! (Completed 1992)

Five Girls' Quilts

After a first attempt as a teenager, I didn't quilt again until I had children. I saw a quick demo on a daytime talk show about using fusible grid. I created my own design and made up everything else I didn't know. Eventually I made five quilts for my five girls. It is fun to see how much I learned along the way. I loved doing the fusible grid, but didn't consider them to be "real' quilts until I attended a workshop a couple of years ago by Carmen Geddes (Tensisters/Quilt Smart). After that I just felt smart!

Sisters of the Cloth

I was really a self-taught quilter until I joined a quilt guild in 2011. We were all beginners at the time, but met once a month for show & tell, and to teach each other something new. I put the 12" blocks we made into this sampler quilt. One of my favorite parts is the dark blue border. I think it would have looked too "sweet" without it. This is more than just a quilt. It is a reminder of how blessed I am to have these ladies in my life. I am so thankful for quilters! (Completed 2012)

The Living Christ

I was asked to create this almost 12’ by 12’ quilt for the Montgomery, Alabama Interfaith Nativity Exhibit. Traditional quilt block patterns were used to represent the figures of the Nativity and other events from the Savior's life (See Below for details). If I couldn't find one I liked then I designed my own.* Many of these sampler blocks were completed by my friends in the Sisters of the Cloth Quilt Guild. I designed and paper-pieced the figures of the Holy Family and then machine appliqued them in a quilt-as-you-go fashion. The star was paper-pieced before being sewn into the background. Including design and construction, this quilt took about 6 months to complete. It's large size required that it be assembled in pieces. The center panel (up to the red print border) was constructed in one piece. The sampler blocks were pieced separately and then sewn into border strips which were quilted before being attached. The center panel is actually a finished quilt and was even bound before the sampler blocks were sewn on. It was designed such that after the exhibit the border could be detached and the center used on a queen-size bed. I planned to construct a second queen-sized quilt out of the sampler blocks from the border, but we haven’t had the heart to take it all apart yet. (Completed, June 2014) The size and scope of this quilt are far outside my level of expertise. I really feel like I was guided from above in the design and completion of this project. Pumpkin Patch

I love the rich, warm colors in this little hanging! It makes me think of everything I look forward to about fall, like growing pumpkin with my little girls. I also love that I can display it from September through November. The original pattern from youcanquiltthis.com was for a pillow, but it takes on a whole different look when framed.
