Rebeca's Quilt
My daughter, who is a secretary at our high school, unexpectedly became a foreign exchange student host for the last two months of this school year. Rebeca, from Brazil became an immediate and endearing part of our family. We soon realized that she would be participating in graduation at the end of May with all that the event requires, including a graduation party. Courtney, my daughter, thought it would be great if "Grandma Phoebe" would make Rebeca a quilt since I had recently retired and started quilting. I had not yet made a full size quilt but I had discovered and embraced Jenny's Missouri Star quilt tutorials....so I picked out the tutorial for the friendship star pinwheel quilt and started to work. The quilt has two corner squares using the Brazilian flag colors and two corner squares, the USA flag colors. All the other squares use two star points from the Brazilian flag, and two from the USA flag, with the pinwheel using a fabric which brought all the colors together in what friendship should be. The border repeated the colorful pinwheels. I had to make it quickly since I just had a very few weeks to piece and get it quilted. As you can see from the picture, I was just finishing up the binding when I took the pictures. Rebeca loved the quilt, but had to have it mailed back home to Brazil when she left in mid June, since it would not fit in her luggage. It finally made it home just this last week, where her mother and grandmother also loved the quilt symbolizing the friendship and love that can happen between people of two different countries.
