Christmas one year I wanted to make quilts as gifts for 6 of my co-workers. This was one of them. I purchased this very busy Asian print fabric and as soon as I got home I said "what was I thinking in buying this?" I didn't like the fabric alone, but for some reason I liked it as an applique piece....so it wasn't a total loss.

Row by Row 2017 - On the Go

I gathered the materials (half were just patterns, half were kits from the participating shops), and got to work. I used a consistent fabric for the sky and grass at the top of the quilt to create more unified whole. There were several applique rows, one paper pieced row, and the row with the sea turtles had yo-yos for the shells. The arrangement I used ended up with a 62x62 throw. I quilted it on a longarm machine, doing free motion quilting. With the poly batting, this is a quilt that can be used anywhere.

Elephant Walk

This quilt was done at a quilting friend retreat. One lady, who had been quilting longer than the rest of us, though she was quite a few years our junior, provided the general pattern and we each put our own tweaks to it. My tweak was to have elephants marching across the strips of fabric. When I mis-cut the backing, a large (unplanned) piece from the front was used to mend the gap. It was this fortuitous error which provided the perfect backdrop for the appliqued monogram that followed. Talk about lemonade from lemons! Now if this ol' elephant can just remember that trick should it be needed again.

Let's Go Dutch

I was browsing the internet for quilts and came across an antique version of this. I added sashing (looks like eyelet?) and made up the border. I did a little applique on the back...it's annoying to me that quilters are starting to do this...when I'm done with a quilt, I don't want to make a pretty back for it!

11th grandbaby

Dresden Flower Pot wall hanging made to go with the Rail Fence Star quilt. Made both from Jenny's tutorials. Modified the Rail Fence to have a white appliqued/embroidered center, so you could see the star better. Love them both - for my youngest daughter having her second baby, my 11th grandbaby.

Tweet Street

This quilt's bluebirds came to be when I miscalculated the border length and needed an extension plan. Not confident with my bird drawing skills, I looked on the net until I noticed some modern art birds were not much more than big commas with eyes, beaks, and a feather or two on the tail. Problem solved. Completed it becomes my Project Linus 2017 donation quilt.
