Last year we lost a darling 8 year old. I let his Mom, my niece, know that when she was ready I would be happy to make her a quilt from his clothes or whatevers. This spring she let me know that the next time I was in town she would like to discuss a project. She asked me to make her three, one each for the grandparents and one for her and her husband using t-shirts she had saved since her son was a very little guy. This is the quilt for her Mom using the t-shirts they brought him from Mexico. Quilting is the result of searching Mexican art. I switched between my long arm and domestic; sewing the extremely long in the ditch and echos on my domestic to eliminate the stress of getting those straight.

See In Remembrance 1 for full story. This quilt is for my sister-in-law, niece’s mother-in-law. Niece asked for it to have all the t-shirts from my brother and his wife’s travels to the southwest. The quilting is continuing the piecing out to the edges so the design shines.

In Remembrance 3

This one is for my Niece and Nephew. In it are pieces of all t-shirts used in all three quilts. The Great nephew loved the color orange and Baby Yoda. Each quilt includes them; this quilt has 8 to represent the number of years we had with him. The quilting is just an all over medium meander so the quilt is the focus not the quilting. As I can’t imagine any of them actually using these I’ve included for my niece the hanging sleeves so they an convert them to a wall hanging.

“Strong” The quilt for Mother

I made a quick lap quilt for my mother after her hip replacement surgery in 2021. I named it “Strong”. It took a long time to talk my mother into having surgery. Finally at age 87 she agreed and was willing to be strong. The quilt label has a small message embroidered on it.

Scrappy Trails Quilt

This pattern is called "Scrappy Trails" by Carlene Westberg Designs. I used a fabric line called "Tickled Pink" by Henry Glass & Co. I am a little behind on my quilting since school started back up, so I have yet to quilt it. I just love the way the colors move around the quilt with this design.

Antique Lace

I wanted to make two of the same quilt from the same jelly roll. I got the first one made and I just love it. So I was really excited to make the second one. That is when the happy accident happened. I turned one of the half square triangles. That created a different block around the pinwheel that forms where the blocks come together. Tulips

Still working through my stash creating Dignity Quilts. I liked the tulips from the panel quilt I'd just finished so I wanted to do a whole quilt of just the tulips. Digging through I found a springy yellow print, yellow fabric and green. I grabbed a big piece of white and set to work. As I was completing them and starting seeing the layout it really was going to look better if set on point. Repeating the tulip in the white areas with the quilting really makes this quilt stand out! Right now, being a horrible person, it is MINE!

Grandmother's Fan

I loved this fabric line from Riley Blake and decided to make the charm squares into a Grandmother's Fan quilt. I wanted the edges to be finished so I made points from the Dresden Plate tutorial. If I were to make this quilt again I would just turn the edges under and keep the curve in the fans so that it would show off the fabric more. I also needed to cut down my background squares so that there wouldn't be so much white. I love the feathery quilting. It really made this into an elegant, old-fashioned quilt with bright happy fabrics.

Kitty Cucumber UFO Quilt

Way back when, I purchased two Timeless Treasures Kitty Cucumber panels in two different colorways, plus some coordinating fabric, with the intention to make two separate quilts. Well, I didn't care for some of the printed squares in the blue colorway, and some of the squares in the green colorway were so pale that they just disappeared. Furthermore, when I prewashed the panels, I found that the blocks were not all square. I tried adding the red heart borders to frame the blocks and give them some character. I tried different arrangements of piecing and sashing with the coordinating fabrics....nothing clicked. When I pulled this out again this year, I decided it was "finish it or donate it." I also decided that I didn't want to purchase any additional fabric for this quilt. When I found the soft butter yellow fabric in my stash, everything sort of fell together. I used the scattered Kitty C fabric (originally purchased for wide borders for two quilts) for the backing, using up the green coordinate fabric to extend the width and length. I quilted this with a walking foot. (Side Story: One of my granddaughters examined this quilt and asked me, "Where's the cucumbers?!?" Kitty Cucumbers are a group of collectible figurines by Schmid Merrimack from the 1980's, collected by my three daughters for birthdays and holidays. They are now Vintage.) No pattern used.

Heirloom Memory Quilt

This quilt was made for my cousin and has quite a bit of a back story. In 2009, this cousin got engaged. Her future mother-in-law was a quilter so she sent each household on our side of the family an 18" square of muslin and told us to make a quilt square out of it. She was planning on making a surprise gift quilt for the new couple. None of my family, including me, knew anything at all about quilting so we did various things such as iron-ons and applique. Each square represented our families and what we liked or our interests. 6 months after the marriage (and no word of the quilt), I asked my cousin about it and she said that the mother-in-law indeed made them a quilt but did not include any of our squares because they "weren't done right". They were given back to her in a plastic shopping bag. Cousin had felt so badly about it that she didn't tell us until I asked. Fast forward to 2018, I asked my cousin if she still had those squares in a bag because now I had a little bit of quilting experience and had the courage to tackle the project. These are the 9 squares she gave me. Most have permanent wrinkles from the years of storage and the iron-ons were delicate. I purposely did minimal stitching on the squares to perserve their integrity. The one in the middle bottom was starting to flake off so I decided to focus on the border and not handle it too much through the machine. (my first ever piano-key border, which I totally loved doing) I grew to love this quilt and I hope she does as well. In all the names/families represented on the quilt, 6 of them have since passed away. I think this will be a treasure to her. Hindsight lessons: 1. the muslin was very soft and thin so I wish I would have backed the squares with a stabilizer because as you can see, they have a bit of gaps. 2. I would have done a quilt-as-you go method so that I could have more stitching on each square without the worry of all the handling of pushing the quilt through the throat of my machine. First Double Wedding Ring Quilt I

My brother asked me to make a quilt for friends of his who live out of the country. These friends recently got married and wanted to give my brother a gift. The gift was a beautiful Persian Rug to take home with him. He thought of a wedding gift to give them when he returned. He requested flowers intertwined throughout wedding rings. I now need to free motion quilt feathers and fillers.
