    Twins Sisters for Two Brothers

My friend introduced me to quilting 33 years ago. I reconnected with her in November 2016 and she introduced me to Missouri Star Quilt Company and the daily deals. I'm a sucker for pretty fabric and I bought 2 Holiday Flourish 9 Silver jelly rolls, not knowing what or how I would do anything with them. In July 2017 I reconnected with a family member who encouraged me to get started. I have 2 sons in their 20's and because they are guys and life happened, I never sewed for them. Those 2 jelly rolls called my name when I saw the Jack and Jill tutorial. The block kind of looks like Texas, our home state, set on its side. And, the jelly rolls are red and black, the colors of our college alma mater and my sons' high school. Christmas is always magical and the combination of the block and the fabric seemed perfect for my guys. I started cutting around September 21st, 2017 and finished the quilts for their Christmas gifts, with the help of my friend, my cousins, my step-mother and father, my husband, and Jenny Doan and Rob Appell's videos. Yes - I did both quilts at the same time. I went through each step with both quilts, keeping them in separate Container Store sweater boxes - a no-brainer, since I work there. Because I bought extra fabric for fear of running out, I had enough left over to make each son a matching pillowcase (with no exposed seam allowances). I enjoyed it so much that I've been buying up fabric to make more quilts even though I don't have a long arm or sit-down free motion machine.

  • Give Thanks Reversible Table Runner
    Give Thanks Reversible Table Runner

I’ve been quilting table runners for my daughter-in-laws. It started a few years back as a birthday present for one daughter-in-law. I like making them because they are quick“ish” and my children don’t have to feel obligated to leave what I make out all year long or when I show up! This year I sent them pumpkins place mats. I got a text from one daughter-in-law saying we could use a fall table runner. That’s when I realized how long ago I started making these. So I told her Rahana has one but I’ll make you one for your birthday. Of course I wasn’t going to wait till July. I was determined to “use what I have”!!! So I found some fall layer cakes and some fall colors and set out to find a table runner to make. The fabric I used was from MSQC but neither are available. One was called Bear Paws and the other was called Fall Festive by Benartex. I went to MSQC Tutorials and saw a quilt called Quatrefoil Quilt. All I saw was Table Runner. I got started right away and I love how it came out. Originally I had made four blocks but the table runner was too big for my daughter-in-laws table so I removed the one block and I’ll use myself for my coffee table. Two blocks have in the center “Give Thanks” and I deliberately put one in the opposite direction so when it is layed out on table you can read from both sides. The back of runner I used pumpkin fabric from JoAnn Fabrics. I quilted with stitch in ditch and decided it looked nice enough with no binding. I love how it turned out. The completed runner measured 15” x 46”.
