Hudson's LITTLE BOY/BIG BOY Reversible Quilt
My adorable little grandson, Hudson, was born with Downs Syndrome as well as an unrelated problem called Hirschsprung's Disease. At just 6 days old he had his first major surgery and has had umpteen procedures since that time. When I decided to learn how to make quilts (in honor & memory of my sweet Momma Betty Ann Bivens Wilson 1931-2008), my first bed size quilt was an oversized twin for Hudson. I chose a quite large disappearing 9-patch using an I SPY layer cake. This would/could be used as a learning tool as he got older. It could also be used in several of his weekly therapies. After the top was pieced, I had the bright idea to make it a truly reversible quilt that could see him all the way through his adulthood. My son, his Daddy, is an avid outdoorsman...hunter, fisherman...like generations of his forefathers so in order to KISS (keep it simple stupid), I did a simple stripe design using wide strips of outdoor fabrics (mallard ducks, bears, fish, etc) sewn as stripes into the overall background fabric of a black & white hashtag design. I don't have a long arm so I found a LQS that rented time on their long arm out to customers. I went and did an overall super simple pattern in bright color variegated thread. Once back home I added my quilt label and VOILA! My first Big Quilt!! Hudson and his older brother Parker drag it out in the floor all the time and play on it. My heart sings with joy!
