B's 5th Birthday Quilt
When my daughter was 4, she took an interest in my quilting; each quilt I made she would give wrap herself in and tell me how "cozy" it was. She was sad to see them go to their intended recipient, so she asked me to make her one she could keep. (She did already have the crib quilt I made her, but she was getting big.) I decided to try to finish it for her 5th birthday... and chose fabrics based on colors she liked. I struggled coming up with a design... and finally decided on a medallion quilt. I created the star for the center, then just made up each "border" as I finished the one before with no real plan in mind. Most of the top is pieced, with the exception of the applique butterflies. The back is a scrappy improv, incorporating some leftover pieces from the top and featuring a section with her name spelled out in Morse Code. I sent this one out to be quilted by a longarmer -- a first for me. We chose an allover floral panto. My daughter loves the finished project. It is roughly 90" square.
