Princess Arya's Quilt

Every Christmas I create a quilt for the grandchild who turned 2 that year. This year it was my only granddaughters turn. About 3 months ago, my husband came up with the brilliant idea that I do a Disney Princess inspired landscape quilt. I scoured Pinterest for tutorials on how to do a landscape quilt - Thank you to everyone who has ever put a picture/tutorial/blogged about quilting, as I don't think that I would have ever been able to complete it without them. I scoured the fabric store for Fat Quarters and yardage. The piece is quilted using free motion quilting on my Janome SeeWist 625E sewing machine (needed to split it in 2 to be able to quilt it all). I hope that my little princess enjoys her quilt.

I made this quilt to honor my dad's contribution to aviation history (and to celebrate his 100th birthday!). He was a P-38 mechanic during WWII and later retired from United airlines. I consider him one of the smartest people I've ever met, as he has the ability to rebuild just about any engine - he even rebuilt an airplane in his garage for 'something to do'! I've listened to many, many stories and can only imagine some of the things he's seen during his lifetime. Words can not begin to describe how thankful I am to have him in my life, as he has always been THE one I could count on to be in my corner.

Three "Grinch" Quilts for Three Grandchildren

Winter (in the park) is coming

Although it is a Summer in the Park pattern, the colours give a more cold feel to it so I prefer to call it Winter in the Park. I cut all the stripes from yardage. I used Lexington range and Kona Solids for the white background. Absolutely adore this pattern and how quickly it can be done! All thanks to Natalie's tutorial.

Disappearing Four Patch Star

Ever since completing other projects with the cut up piecework, I was looking for another variation. When Jennie Doan recently gave a summer workshop using her original Disappearing Four Patch pattern from Block Magazine and added star points, it piqued my interest. The oversized blocks eliminated the need for sashing strips. I decided to use a teal tonal print for the star. The possibilities for other block color combinations seemed endless. The participants in the workshop all had beautiful blocks to share. It was hard to decide which I liked best. I free motioned a floral design between the units and assorted straight line quilting in the borders on my domestic sewing machine. The quilt soon made it's way to a new home.

Dance of the Dragonflies Quilt

Block Magazine, Winter 2014 edition, from the Missouri Star Quilt Co. profiled a strip pieced, half square triangle quilt with an unusual twist. It's called Cutting Corners and as Jenny states, "...its gorgeously simple." The quilt blocks were surprisingly easy to put together. In fact, there are several layouts that one can experiment. I selected four batik and green tonal fabrics which seemed to fit this lap size quilt perfectly. The colors combined to give the quilt a random design. The colors and texture of the fabrics were inspired by the sights and sounds of lazy summer days by a lakeside cabin. I added a piano key border with the leftover strips. Then, I machine quilted an all over design of dragonflies and flowers with blue/green variegated thread on my embroidery machine. Jennie Doan's Cutting Corners would be a great pattern for both the novice and veteran quilter to try because of the design elements, eye catching appearance and versatility. Already thinking of trying this in another color way.

Halloween Surprise

This quilt was made to use in the Fall and during the month of October. I used Cheeky Wee Pumpkins 10" squares and it went together quickly. I wanted to introduce a purple batik even though there is no purple in the Cheeky Wee Pumpkins fabric. To accomplish this I used purple batik in the 4-patches and again in the binding. Due to the fact I didn't have quite enough backing fabric I pieced a large 4-patch using four 10" squares I had leftover and centered it in the middle of the backing fabric. Machine quilting was done by the MSQC and I chose a spiderweb design.

Swooning

Dottie Chevron

This was started on Valentine's Day 2016. I had originally wanted to make a pinwheel quilt, and bought the Dottie and white Moda charm packs. What I didn't know (at the time) was the pinwheel made the squares smaller (first quilt planned with a specific pattern in mind), and I didn't know how to resize - so I found a chevron pattern and made this one instead. The back is pieced because I overbought yardage - by a LOT. Lessons learned: STRETCH the backing (thanks to a quilting buddy for that lesson) - Square up those squares - Trust in your ability to design

Study Guide Quilt

This is the youngest daughters' college quilt. It's got some "odd" fabrics, but all are related to her area of study (forensic science). Since I included the skeleton, periodic table, and formulas, I called it the study guide quilt. She picked out some of the fabric - I picked some out, i think she was surprised it was finished before Christmas. The pattern was an idea I saw off of Red Pepper Quilts and it was all yardage.

World War II Veteran Quilt

I have been asked by local quilt shops to offer up a quilt of valor, at least a couple times a year. I would be happy to do so, but it occurred to me that I should first make a quilt for my Mom's two brothers, both of whom are World War II veterans. Each star on my Uncle Art's quilt, featured here, represents one of his descendants ~ children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
