My mom's husband was diagnosed with a few different types of cancer and had to start chemo. When I found out, I had received a Missouri Star email with a layer cake in it called Pure & Simple Wovens. It dawned on me that I needed to make Paul a quilt. And that layer cake was the one for the job! I ordered it and when I arrived I wondered what pattern to use. Had to be manly, and match the layer cake. I had always wanted to do a chevron quilt, and it quikly made the top of the list. I watched the Missouri Star Quilt chevron tutorial and then began the process. The chevrons were easy and I loved how they came together. Then I needed to buy the backing fabric. I went to our local fabric paradise, an acre and a half of fabric. There is a lot to chose from, I can spend (and have spent) hours in that store. But this trip had a mission. So I took in some of my scraps and looked at a fabric. Not that one. Then the next fabric litterally jumped off the shelf at me. I didn't need to look any further, it was the only one that would have worked. So two fabrics in, and I had found what I wanted. That didn't keep me from perusing for a while though, it IS a fabric paradise afterall.... I was then able to use my brand new mid arm and Dream Frame to quilt it. I chose to quilt the "white" chevron and leave the color one alone. Thinking it would pop more. I am very happy with how it turned out. This was my very first quilt that I had done from start to finish. Finding the perfect fabric, the right pattern, all the cutting, sewing, sandwhiching, quilting, hand sewing the binding and hand embroidery of the quilt label. I could hardly wait to gift it. It was well received, but the most touching part came the next day. My mom sent me a picture. Paul had asked if he really could use the quilt, my mom just kind of laughed, he pulled the quilt down over him amd she said he was asleep in moments. The picture made me cry, and I love it. That was the moment that made it all worth it, every second of the process. Quilting is so good for the soul.
