Birdhouse of the Month

Common Thread Quilt Club exchange. Theme was birdhouse of the month. Set with Winding Roads setting as seen in Sharyn Craig's Settings book. I did 3 of the blocks (December, March and June). Most are seasonal themed, but some not so much. Setting material from Dry Creek Quilts - FQ bought in lots of colors during Shop Hop. January - snow man. Feb - heart. March - shamrocks. April - Easter eggs. May flowers. June - strawberries. July - 4th. August - garden. Sept - schoolhouse. Oct - fall. Nov - fall. Dec - teddy bear and wrapped gifts. 2006

Dana's Asian Wall Hanging

I forgot all about the fact that my sister-in-law asked me to make her a quilt for her living room, until she reminded me last March. So I looked for something simple and pleasing - she though Asian style would look good. Found this kit at Holly's Quilt Cabin. I messed up the center panel by washing it - the black ran into the while areas. Then I tried a color-remover, and it bleached the whole panel. So I went on the internet to see if somebody, somewhere had this panel for sale, else I was going to be out of luck. And I found it, yea! Quilted by Connie Nelson at Top Quilters. Pelican

My mother-in-law collects pelicans. This is for her. A paper-pieced pelican surrounded by ocean waves. The triangles are pretty tricky because the good measurement is the 2-inch hypotenuse (long side); luckily a had a specialized template. Made a black french knot for the eye, and then chained stitched around with yellow floss. It was hard to embroider due to the folded back fabric from the paper-piecing. Stitched in the ditch with variegated blue (ocean) and clear thread. 12-2012

Diamond Log Cabin

Saw this at the quilt show, bought a kit for paper piecing. The pieces are really small, each diamond measure 4 inches in length. Used the scraps (from the trash literally) of Kaffe Fassett fabric leftovers.

Tiddly Winks

Stack of whole line of fat quarters - lime, turquoise, pink and brown. Retro. Undid the one block that used a stash pink. Going to redo it. Could not find a good matching border on the shop hop; returned to Sew-Ciety while waiting for Jacob and bought a brown with butterflies for the border (Aug.13, 2012). I ripped out the bottom right pink and brown block because it used a non-line pink. I have plenty of matching pinks to re-sew it with, that will match better.

Wild Red Geese Log Cabin

These are made using on-the-top paper piecing. 1.5 inch strips. The papers can be used for regular log cabins, or for the wild goose variation. I think I bought the papers at a Quilt-A-Fair show, in Longmont, CO. I am not sure whether any of my local stores carry them. I used a whole lot of fabrics, lights and yellows vs. darks and brights. The yellows stick out - that's ok. I have twenty 12-inch squares.

Mini Flag #2

Bill from facilities came to the office and admired the flag quilt. Gonna make him one. Got the red triangles done. Sunday, Nov 10: going downstairs to watch Broncos and sew some more white triangles. Friday, Nov 15: finished blue field. Monday, Nov 18: almost finished quilting - ditch for stripes and stars. May do echo around the stars. Size: 26" x 36" Sat. 11/30/13. 2 sides binding done. Completed, label states Made by Diane Zirin, 2013. Mon 12/2/13. Caught Bill (Gentry) as he was going down the hall, gave him the flag quilt. I think he is going to give it to his daughter that is in the Air Force. He was very pleased. He might bring me some chocolate fudge.

Mini Stained Glass

Size: 15 inches square. Paper-pieced stained glass. Shown in Bee Bold show, July 2008. The thing that was funny was that the pattern book actually called this the "large" size and had paper piecing for an identical quilt only about 9 inches square. (From Some of My Favorite Mini-quilts, Christiane somebody). Blue is Moda Marble, colors are Fairy Frost. Was thinking about making another one with different, pastel, colors.

My Flag

I saw a kit for a similar flag in a magazine. I designed the blue field with Friendship Stars. The challenge in this quilt was keeping the sizing correct for a flag, which meant that the blue field would span 7 stripes, 4 red and 3 white. The stripes are very scrappy triangles. It is ditch quilted.
