Ice Skater's Quilt #1
This is a quilt i made for a customer (my husbands grandma ordered it for her other 2 grand daughters, which were his 2 little cousins) they are amazing ice skaters being trained for the olympics. She ordered 2 different quilts that are ice skate themed, this is the first. The quilt is what i consider a small throw (54"x54"), red backing and black sparkle binding (the girls love sparkles). She had strict parameters for ice skate fabric and the over all quilt- nothing pink, nothing black, nothing Christmas, nothing too babyish, no hockey skates. It was a challenge to find fabric and the orginial fabric i had ordered did not look like the swatch online. So she had to settle for the black ice skates, but theg have a touch of gold metallic accents in the ice skating fabric. They no longer make this fabric and im so glad it worked out. Thr pattern is a disappearing 9 patch and my husband had a curious idea.. "Honey, what happens if you turn the blocks so all the solid colors meet and make bigger squares?" He said while looking at the quilt on the design wall. "I dont know, lets try it" it endes up being the winning pattern out of 2 arrangements of the blocks and my client loved it! She said it looks like "figure eights" and so clever to add it to the design element of the ice skate quilt. The quilt is custom quilted (something i rarely do due to most time constraints, but i decided to give it a go) it has "dot to dot" continuous curve quilting in the solid squares to make the flowers, echos around the iceskates to pop them out and in all the white spaces, wishbone (or "figure eight quilting" )the binding is hand bound. I hope she loves it!
