For Freddy & Gwen
This quilt is straight out of a wonderful book, Freddy & Gwen Collaborate Again, by Freddy Moran and Gwen Marston. It was based on a 1937 vintage quilt. I loved building my own "fabric" by stacking random width strips to create strata. I then cut each strata using a 10.5" square ruler placed on the diagonal. Look closely and you'll see that some strips are also pieced - straight cuts from the edges of the strata pieces left after cutting out the squares. Many fabrics were fat quarters from Judy's Sew and Vac in Santa Cruz; mostly orange, red and gold florals and abstract dots with some blotchy but bright solids, stripes and black & white prints. Used Freddy & Gwen's large black and white dots and solid black sashing for the four blocks in a four block design. Completed nine of the sixteen blocks during three weeks in Santa Cruz, CA, in May/June 2016. Finished quilt top in July. Long arm quilted in variegated thread in circular bubbles of varying sizes, which looks great on the solid black backing.
