Mom's Birthday Gift
I don't know what compelled me to do this b/c I had never made any type of quilt before but back in 2003 I decided to make my mom a family quilt for her birthday. I asked all of her children and grandchildren to send me a 13 inch square piece of fabric that fit their personality or to make a 13 inch block. I had NO IDEA what I was doing. I just started sewing strips between the blocks and made rows. I am shocked it turned out as well as it did b/c I had no pattern and no instruction.
My girls hand stitched their blocks but all the rest were just squares of fabric. There is one block for dad, five blocks for her children plus 3 blocks for spouses, 17 grandchild blocks, 1 great grandchild block, two dogs, and a Your Family block. (30 total).
I didn't quilt most of it, only in the sashings. I used yarn ties b/c my grandmother used to tie her quilts and my mom loved to play with the yarns while watching tv.
