I am 68 and have been sewing since about 8 years of age. I started quilting while out recovering from a back surgery in 1997. I turned on TV and Alex Anderson was on Simply Quilts. I thought I can do that. Since that time I have probably made over 60 quilts of valor and about 200 personal quilts for family and friends.

Fractal project
My husband gets a kick out of giving me challenges. He wanted a fractal quilt. So I started looking for a design. This one started out with a 3 x 3 square. I then went to UPS and enlarged it to several sizes bigger, Picked a fabric swatch for each piece, cut out each separate piece after taking a photo of the layout and assembled it. It was done as a quilt as you go adding a layer at a time and hand quilting ( lousy at it ) until the end.

Morrocan Tile enlargement
I found a wall hanging kit named Morrocan Tile in a quilt book. I ordered the kit but did not like the colors. After living 3 years in Italy while my husband was in service I knew from visiting the markets that no decent Morrocan would use brown in a quilt. I then located what I thought of as Morrocan colors. My husband does not believe a quilt should do anything but lay on a bed so I made a king.

Raeanna's Window
My niece had just had her 5th child. I had made all of the previous ones a quilt at birth and one on their 1st birthday. I decided to design something different for Raeanna. Here is her window seat from an attic window with 2 chenille cats and 3 dimensional pillows. I brought it in to show my guild and they insisted I get it copyrighted.

My first quilting class - Twisted Bargello
I walked into a quilt store for the first time in my life after moving to Ga. Up on the wall was a Twisted Bargello wall hanging and a class was scheduled for the following week. As it was a guild meeting was going on and when I found out I liked to quilt I was invited to join the next meeting. I had to figure out how to change a wall hanging to a king but I signed up and had a very good time. Several people offered to help me choose color and fabrics but I said no. I know what I like. Love this quilt

I had dropped out of my guild due to having one person in it I could not work with. Immediately a friend talked me into joining the Quilts of Valor. Well my husband is retired Navy and his father did 26 year, my father and uncle were Navy so it was not hard to convince me. We deal mainly with scraps and some panels but once again I like to try to be unique.

As a member of Quilts of Valor we receive many donations of fabric and among them are many pieces of homespun plaid. They sit in the boxes and sometimes big pieces will get pulled for backing. I decided to use them to make some quilts. The first one I tried was simple but the photo of the man who received it had a huge smile on his face. It was soft and very manly. So I decided this was very doable

Border Periwinkle
I was on the MSQC deal of the day and saw this layer cake I needed to get. I had already decided I needed to make the bordered Periwinkle and I thought this would be great. I bought additional layer cakes and some yardage. And off I went. I ended up having enough to make two. Well the second was actually made with the blocks I joined together the wrong way and had set aside. It is a lap and there is such a big difference but I love them both. I decided to give it to my son for Christmas. A week after Christmas my daughter in law calls me. Can you enlarge Jer's quilt. It is perfect for our bedroom. I said let me send you the photo of the king I made. She loved it and I have decided to mail it to her. Although I love the fabric and the quilt it looks lousy in our bedroom.

Ginny Beyers Moonglow
I loved this kit and posted it on my page so I would remember the name. My girlfriend in Italy saw it and asked me if I would make it for her. When it went on sale I grabbed it. It terrified me so it took me a month to open the box. It is now finished and she loves it.
