I haven't been quilting long, but I am learning to love the processing. it always amazes me when the binding is done, you hang the quilt up and say "Wow I made that!" But believe it or not, I have yet to make a quilt just for me; most of the quilts I've made were gifts for someone else. I guess its time I think of myself for a change...

Mom's Christmas Gift
in 2015 my father had passed away. After we put Dad to rest, I helped Mom to clean out all of his things. While going through his closet, I saw these very hideous aloha shirts that he would wear. I thought maybe I could do a quilt project with them, so I took them and began an applique quilt using Dad's aloha shirts. I finished quilt late in 2015, right before Christmas and gave the quilt to Mom as her Christmas gift. You can imagine how much she cried.

The red fabric I purchased from a vendor from New Zealand I met at a quilt show. They specialized in custom hand dyed fabric. I wish I got their info because their fabrics are amazing!!!

Butterfly quilt
It never fails to make me feel good giving a quilt I make to someone special. A dear friend of mine was having a serious rough patch with...well practically everything going on in her life. Her birthday was coming up and I wanted to give her something special, so I made her this quilt. I didn't complete it in time for her birthday, but on the card I jokingly said "well I am early for next year." I had just started to learn how to applique and this quilt is far from perfect. Nonetheless, she was in tears when she received the quilt. To see that reaction made all the frustration and seam ripping worth while.

I didn't like the fabric alone, but for some reason I liked it as an applique piece....so it wasn't a total loss.

Dad's Shirts
After my father passed away, I helped my mother clear out the closet of all his cloths. I found these plaid shirts that he used to wear all the time in various colors. If you know anything about the Hawaiian cowboy (aka the paniolo) I am pretty sure you recognize the palaka shirts. I took some of Dad's clothes and made various quilts out of them for the whole family. This was one of the designs I came up with. Needless to say most of my family was shocked I could sew, but were happy that they have something to remember Dad by.

Missouri Star Wall Hanging
I needed something to fill the empty space above my kitchen sink. There's no window, only a small high cabinet. I wanted a star design and when I saw the size of the block in Jenny's Missouri Star quilt tutorial, I knew that's what I wanted. I added a 1.5-inch border and a contrast faux-flange to the binding and it's perfect. This is only my second quilt project, aside from a few mug rugs, and I'm very happy with it. :-)

Janie's quilt
This has been a long time project. All quilts take me a long time as I only have very limited time to devote. I fell in love with this quilt on display at MSQC. Purple is my favorite color.
