Sail for my son
My son just adores his Grandpa. They have a special bond like no other. We are a military family and he has never lived in the same state as my parents. So our son gets to spend a whole month every summer fishing with my dad in Florida. Last summer with sheer determination he left on an adventure to fulfill a dream of catching his first sailfish with his Grandpa. my son was 11 at the time but this was his dream since he was 4 years old! Last summer that dream came true and that memory of catching this fish with him will be one he cherishes forever. I wanted to make him a quilt to honor that. There are not many sailfish quilts out there so I had to get creative and create my first appliqué project. I started with the MSQC “stack and flip” quilt as my background. I watched and followed several of Jenny’s appliqué tutorials, as well as Rob’s from man sewing. I found a fish picture I liked, expanded it onto several sheets and cut it out. Then searched high and low for the perfect fabrics to create my fish. It took me several weeks but I finished it just in time for my son’s return from his Grandpas house in Florida. He was thrilled with his quilt. It is mounted proudly over his bed and he loves showing it off to everyone who visits. He also lovingly shares the story of catching his first sailfish with his Grandpa.
