When I started quilting, I made a simple row by row quilt as my first project. It went to my eight year old grandson. He has long outgrew it. This time I decided on Missouri Star Quilt Pattern Stack and Flip. I chose Origins by Jennifer Young Jelly Roll for Benartex. The patterns and themes lent itself to this particular quilt for my now college bound grandson. To remind him of home I also appliqued a silhouette of his dog, bunny images and paw prints onto various parts of the quilt. Backed with blue cuddle fabric. Quilted using straight line stitching across the entire quilt.
This is the first of several quilts I’m working on for Christmas presents for my 6 adult children . This quilt is actually my second quilt. I used a layer cake named Coral Canyon and a white layer cake from Missouri Star Quilts. I am now in the process of adding the borders one 3 inch border of sea foam and emerald green and one 4 inch border of Coral Canyon of coral reef. The son that this is going to is the Captain of a crew/supply boat in the gulf out of Venice Louisiana.
Update: I quilted with Wasatch Quilting design Daisy 2021 and hand bound. I made this quilt top for my Aunt. My Aunt's favorite colors are pink and green. The background fabric has cream with green leaves on it. It is made of nine patch blocks alternated with another nine patch block that has four patches in the corners. I love chaining four patches. I used some vintage fabric for this quilt. I've been making quilts for all my aunts. I have one more quilt to make. I hope to quilt it tomorrow. 62" 71"
My Glorious Granddaughter is graduating from High School this spring. When I asked her if she would like a quilt she said yes! Could it be a throw size in mint and greys? Okkkaay...she sent me to Hobby Lobby to look at the mint dish rags. Which I carried over to the fabric department to see what I could find. WOW! Didn't realize it is the color this year. Found some beautiful fabrics to use in a star pattern I had found sometime ago. I made up several different blocks using the colors and texted them to her. She picked her favorite arrangement and I got started. Yikes, a lot of HST. Friend said to do at the least part of it as flying geese and here is how you do them 4 at once. That was a great time saver. Once together I laid out several choices on borders and texted her again. Going with what turned out to be both of our favorite layout! I used a large flower meander and leave things. (Technical term) The binding is with the same fabric as the outside border; I really like the look of an infinity edge on quilts that I want your eye to go to the center, not the edge.
My first grandchild is on the way so I plan to make plenty of quilts, garments and doll clothes for her. I'm so excited!! My daughter chose a woodland theme for the nursery, but this quilt will probably be used in their living room. Babies aren't supposed to be covered with a blanket for several months so I decided to make one for her to lay upon on the floor. I used two layers of thick cotton batting to make it a little more cushy. The fabric collection is called Forest Fellows by Robert Kaufman. I modified their free pattern to use smaller blocks. I used designs from Ace Points Embroidery and a coordinating panel for the pieced backing.
This table topper or wall hanging was based on the Missouri Star pattern called Winter Star. The original pattern was blue and white and consisted of 8 “A” blocks and 8 “B” blocks. I didn’t have enough contrast in the layer cake I was using to make 16 blocks, so I ended up with 9 blocks. I added sashing and a border to increase the size. I used 3 “B” blocks and placed them in the middle row and 6 “A” blocks on the top and bottom rows.
October 2019 my Mom, two friends and I made a quilt shop safari across two states to go to a Jenny Doan trunk show. This is made from the 5 inch squares that were in our swag bags. We “hit” four quilt shops on the way to my Mom’s house! 3 more on the way to the show! Next morning we headed back to my mom’s via another 5 quilt shops, a candy store, and an amazing yarn store. For good measure after leaving my moms we hit one more! It was an amazing trip, the trunk of the car was stuffed to the brim. I did a medium sized meander in all of the background squares the pinwheels would pop up. Likely will be a shroud but will let. Y Mom decide.
