Here is the final product. I have never made a quilt, but always liked the idea of repurposing special items of clothing. When my husband died, I was left with lots of his dress shirts and decided to make a quilt. He and I spent as much time as we could sailing. I wanted a design that would reflect our times at sea. I watched many of Jenny's tutorials looking for inspiration. I realized that by taking 2 flying geese, one horizontally and the other vertically, I had a sail boat. I used the Quilt in a Day template that Jenny demonstrated. It took me a while but I finally finished it. The quilt top has been sent off to be finished, but here is the photo.

Corona Quilt Number 2

When I made my first quilt from my husband's shirts, I told everyone that it was my first and last quilt. A friend warned that I would be hooked. She was right. I started looking at patterns and found this one on the Missouri Star site. I thought it would look great on my bed. Jenny calls this stars and pinwheels. I made it larger for a king sized bed by making using Quilt In A Day for all the flying geese. This photo is before sending it off to my quilting lady.

Corona Quilt Number 3

My first quilt was made from my husband’s shirts. I was sorting things out and realized that I still had lots of shirt material. I made this quilt for my sister in Florida. She often has company and can use this for someone sleeping on the sofa or on a blow up mattress. I also over estimated the number of blocks even before I decided to add the frames around the blocks. So I still have plenty extra for another project! Finally back from the quilter! Here are the finished photos.

Corona Quilt Number 4.

My niece has enlisted in the Air Force and will report next August after she graduates from high school. I found the fabric on line as well as the pattern for the airplanes. I was hoping to give it to her for Christmas, but my quilter is totally backed up. Finally finished. My quilter was able to find a great star pattern. It is on the way to my niece.

Corona Quilt Number 5

My sister loves flamingos and hopes to move to Florida in the next year or two. I found a set of 7 fat quarters on line. Three have flamingos ant the rest tropical foliage. The prints were too large to piece blocks, so I used cut the quarters into squares. I left the flamingo squares as is and found a diamond patterned for the rest. I won’t be able to get it quilted until after the holidays.

I finally bought a new sewing machine which came with a walking foot. I have been wanting to learn to quilt my projects. I had blocks left over from corona quilt number 5 and decided to make a small quilt for a baby or baby doll. I like the pattern but would do it differently next time.

Something for a dog!

I had extra blocks from my niece's Air Force quilt, so I made a quilt for her dog. It also gave me a chance to practice my machine quilting. I have learned to make a virtue of necessity. I know I can’t do perfect lines, so I go for waves.

The end of the fish blocks!

I way overestimated the number of fish blocks I needed for my sister's quilt. I finally used them up on this lap quilt. This is about as big a quilt as I can do on my home machine without quilting in sections and sewing them together. I like the way I quilted it, although there are mistakes. I learned to do the flange binder from Natalie. Thanks. I love the way it turned out.

Broken Pinwheels

I offered to make a quilt for my 11 year old grandniece. She picked out the pattern and the fabric. This is the first quilt I have done on a long arm machine with a pantograph. I love the way it turned out. My cat, who runs my quality control department, approves. The pattern is split pinwheels by Orange Dots Quilts. It is available at orangedotsquilts.etsy.com The pattern resulted in lots of extra half square triangles, so I made several pillows.

Confetti Star

I love the look of batiks and love working with them. When I saw Jenny's tutorial on the Confetti Star, I knew it would look great with an assortment of batiks. I quilted it on a long arm using a pantograph. I am very happy with the way it turned out, although I didn’t think I would ever finish hand stitching the binding.

My first free motion on a long arm

I had a few blocks left over from a large bed quilt, which provided the perfect opportunity to experiment with free motion quilting. I love the way it turned out. And it is the perfect size when I need to nap on the sofa!

String Fling

UFO #3 finished this year! Twenty three years ago I started this and three other quilts with this fabric for two of my daughters sharing a bedroom. Before I could finish them, they decided they wanted a yellow and blue room. So I put these on hold and went on to other projects. Last year I added extra blocks all the way around to make it fit my bed. Ask them today if they want their quilts! Sorry...it's going on my bed first!

Nine Sisters

I still have Kansas Troubles and the like fabrics. I think this must be project 6. When I saw the tutorial for the Nine Sisters pattern on the Jordan Fabrics YouTube site it moved to the top of my list! This quilt is a queen size so I adjusted the corners from the pattern to have finished stars. Put a small cream border around it all and then the burgundy large border. I used my Elvira ruler and a straight edge to do the stars. The cream squares between the stars have a single star. The creams separating all the stars have a meander with scattered stars. The final border has "piano keys" at one inch and again scattered stars. My Aunt liked it so much she asked for one! Her's has a green border.

Baby number 4

One more baby quilt for our Covid baby boom. Mom and Dad have chosen an airplane theme for the nursery. I found this pattern on Etsy and added the clouds and checkerboard border. White minky on the back. The tan plane wings have the baby's initials. The pattern is Squadron Leader by Carla Morris ( Granny Maud's Girl). Quilted swirls and jet streams behind the planes. I used some of my favorite fabrics from my stash. I love how it cameout.

Spring twist memories

My mom who suffers from early dementia just recently sold her house to be near her kids The last thing we sewed together were curtains for her bedroom. She loves teal blue and her late husband loved orange. We had a heck of a time getting orange grosgrain ribbon sewed on straight. We finally had it perfect and realized we had sewn it on the wrong side instead of crying we started laughing hysterically. It’s a memory she still has. This solid blue fabric was left over from those curtains and I used a mixed stash of jelly rolls for the rest. I only had to purchase backing it’s in the mail to her now and I wish I could see her face when she opens it. I’m sure my brother will snap a picture for me.

This is 50wt, 3 ply cotton in 141+ colors. It goes on sale now and then for less than $2.50. Moving on: I made this quilt between Jan & March, 2020. Finished size is 56X76. Started at our annual January Quilting Retreat, fun for that type of event. Batting is unbleached cotton from Hobbs Tuscany, backing is the perfect combo of colors and polka dots. Large meander quilting for soft drape. It's really cosy. It matches the living room so I'm keeping it. .......posted 101020.

Easy Carpenter's Star Kaffe Fassett
